Joan Guanyabens

General coordinator of Health ICT at the Catalan Health Ministry and chief executive officer of the Catalan Agency for Health Information, Assessment and Quality (CAHIAQ)

Dr. Joan Guanyabens is graduated in medicine and surgery. He is also Master of Medicine in Hospital Management in 1988 from ESADE. He is currently the general coordinator of Health ICT at the Catalan Health Ministry and chief executive officer of the Catalan Agency for Health Information, Assessment and Quality (CAHIAQ). From his current position he is running the Catalan strategic plan for health ICT deployment at the Catalan Health Systems which is composed -among others- by projects such as the Catalan shared electronic medical record, electronic prescription, personal health folder for citizens, medical digital imaging and telemedicine and telecare. The mission of this Agency is to integrate the Information Technologies with the Health Technology Assessment. The CAHIAQ provides and manages the information, generates knowledge and evaluates the Catalan healthcare system.

His professional career has always been related to the utilization and application of information and communication technologies in the health care sector, where he has taken on many different roles in public and private entities. For 6 years he was Director at UDIAT of the Organizational Development and of Information Technologies Diagnostic Center (Parc Taulí’s Sanitary Corporation). He also served as the Secretary of Strategy and Coordination of the Health Department of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia in 2007.

Joan Guanyabens has also participated as an assessor and expert in healthcare information systems in the European Union ICT and Information Society Programs, from the first I+D framework program (AIM - Advanced Informatics in Medicine). He is a founding member of the Catalan Information and Healthcare Forum, as well as of the IHE-Spain initiative, and the HL7-Spain Association, where he served as President until March 2007.
